Development of a measurement technique for airborne ultrasound

IFA and PTB now developed a first draft of a new method for measuring the exposure of a worker to ultrasound noise.

The draft is the result of extensive studies on a typical welding machine used as a reference workplace in a laboratory environment. IFA systematically tested measurement methods defined in current standards and highlighted several shortcomings. PTB performed high resolution scans of the workplace’s (ultra)sound field which allowed explaining the shortcomings. Both taken together led to the definition of a new method which is both fast and valid even with highly complex ultrasound fields. The draft has been reviewed by practitioners and experienced measurement engineers and is now applied to field tests on real life industrial work places. More details on the method can be found in the next newsletter No.3.
